Czech President Petr Pavel Hosts Annual Ambassadors’ Meeting at Prague Castle

On August 26, 2025, Czech President Petr Pavel welcomed the ambassadors of the Czech Republic to the traditional Annual Ambassadors’ Meeting at Prague Castle. The gathering, an important fixture of the Czech diplomatic calendar, brought together the country’s top representatives abroad for consultations, exchange of views, and strategic alignment.

In his address, President Pavel emphasized the significance of diplomacy as the first line of defense in safeguarding national interests and promoting the Czech Republic’s values in an increasingly complex world. He reflected on the recent developments in international politics, including the ongoing geopolitical challenges in Eastern Europe, energy security concerns, and the global economic shifts that demand both vigilance and adaptability from the Czech diplomatic corps.

“The Czech Republic must continue to be a voice for democracy, stability, and cooperation in Europe and beyond,” Pavel stated. He reminded the ambassadors of their dual responsibility: to represent Prague’s positions abroad, while also bringing insights and perspectives from host countries back to the domestic debate.

Speech by the Minister of Foreign Affairs

The President’s remarks were followed by an address by Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský, who expanded on the government’s foreign policy priorities for the coming year. Lipavský highlighted three main pillars:

  1. European and Transatlantic Cooperation – Reinforcing ties within the European Union and NATO remains a cornerstone of Czech diplomacy. Lipavský underlined that the Czech Republic will continue to support collective security and to advocate for a strong and united European response to external challenges.
  2. Support for Ukraine and Eastern Partnership – Lipavský reiterated Prague’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining support for other Eastern Partnership countries striving for reform and closer integration with European structures.
  3. Global Engagement – The Minister called for a more visible Czech presence in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, noting that global trade and technological cooperation are increasingly vital for the country’s prosperity. He encouraged ambassadors to seek opportunities to expand economic diplomacy and to promote Czech innovation abroad.

A Reception at Prague Castle

Following the speeches, the event transitioned into a more informal reception in the historic halls of Prague Castle. This provided the ambassadors with an opportunity to network among themselves, exchange experiences, and discuss practical aspects of their missions. The reception also allowed for conversations with senior officials from the Presidential Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, fostering closer coordination between Prague and its embassies worldwide.

The setting of Prague Castle, steeped in history and symbolism, served as a reminder of the weight carried by Czech diplomacy. It underscored the continuity of the nation’s foreign policy tradition: balancing national interests with its commitments as a responsible member of the international community.

Conclusion

The Annual Ambassadors’ Meeting 2025 reaffirmed the central role of diplomacy in shaping the Czech Republic’s position in the world. Both President Petr Pavel and Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský conveyed a clear message: in an era marked by uncertainty, Czech diplomacy must remain proactive, principled, and resilient.

For the ambassadors, the meeting not only provided guidance but also reinforced a sense of collective mission. As they return to their posts across the globe, they carry with them the responsibility of representing a Czech Republic that seeks to be a constructive, reliable, and forward-looking partner on the international stage.
