Czech Republic to host Crimea Platform summit in October

The Czech Republic will host the Crimea Platform Parliamentary Summit on 23-24 October. The summit aims to restore Ukraine’s territorial integrity and put an end to Russian occupation in the Crimean peninsula. Czech lower house speaker Marketa Pekarova Adamova confirmed that European and world politicians, alongside Ukrainian activists from the occupied territories, will be invited to attend the summit. The first summit was held in Zagreb, Croatia, last year and was attended by Nancy Pelosi, the former Speaker of the US House of Representatives. Adamova called for the establishment of an international tribunal for the crimes of aggression against Ukraine and the prosecution of perpetrators, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and his associates.

The Czech Republic is committed to supporting Ukraine and strengthening the cooperation between Ukraine and the Czech Republic. In recognition of her exceptional personal efforts in this regard, Adamova received the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise from Ukrainian Supreme Council head Ruslan Stefanchuk, awarded by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

The summit comes at a time of heightened tension between Ukraine and Russia, with Russia having recently deployed tens of thousands of troops along its border with Ukraine. Ukraine has accused Russia of escalating the conflict and attempting to annex the country’s territory. The situation has raised concerns among the international community, with some calling for diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.

In addition to the summit, a two-day European Union parliamentary conference began in Prague on 25 April. The parliamentary heads of EU member states discussed Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the EU’s response in the wider geopolitical context. On Tuesday, the main topic of debate will be the EU’s role in global cooperation between democratic countries and the problem of member states’ dependence on totalitarian regimes. Czech Senate Chairman Milos Vystrcil (ODS) stated that 52 foreign delegations had been invited to the conference.
