Egypt Celebrates National Day in Prague with Cultural Flair and Diplomacy
On Wednesday, July 23, 2025, the Egyptian Ambassador to the Czech Republic, His Excellency Mahmoud Afifi, hosted a festive reception at the Egyptian Residence on Italská Street in Prague to commemorate Egypt’s National Day. The event brought together members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the Czech government, and friends of Egypt for an evening of cultural celebration and diplomatic engagement.
Among the distinguished guests were former Czech President Václav Klaus and his wife Livia, Cardinal Dominik Duka, as well as notable figures such as Eliška Hašková-Coolidge, former Chief of Protocol of the White House. The presence of such high-profile attendees underscored the strong bilateral ties and mutual respect between Egypt and the Czech Republic.
The reception featured a vibrant performance by the Czech ensemble ‘Mata Hari’, a group renowned for its dedication to Egyptian folklore and traditional dance. Their dynamic presentation, inspired by ancient Egyptian motifs and music, captivated the audience and added a colorful cultural dimension to the event.
As a representative of the Czech government, Deputy Minister Jiří Kozák addressed the guests, emphasizing the historical importance of the National Day and the enduring partnership between Egypt and the Czech Republic. He expressed appreciation for the continued support and collaboration on political, cultural, and economic levels.
One of the evening’s highlights was a sponsored raffle organized by EgyptAir. Four lucky winners were awarded all-expenses-paid vacations to Egypt, providing a direct and joyful connection to the country’s famed hospitality and world-class tourist destinations.
The event was held from 5 to 7 p.m. and offered guests a blend of formal diplomacy and relaxed celebration, complete with traditional Egyptian refreshments and warm hospitality.
Egypt’s National Day, celebrated annually on July 23, marks the anniversary of the 1952 Revolution, a pivotal moment in the country’s modern history. On this day, the Free Officers Movement, led by Muhammad Naguib and Gamal Abdel Nasser, overthrew King Farouk and ended the monarchy, paving the way for the establishment of a republic.
The revolution signaled the beginning of significant political and social change in Egypt, including land reforms, modernization efforts, and a shift in Egypt’s regional role. The July 23 revolution remains a symbol of sovereignty and national pride, commemorated each year with official ceremonies, parades, and celebrations both at home and in Egyptian diplomatic missions worldwide.
The reception in Prague served not only as a tribute to this national milestone but also as a testament to the vibrant relationship between Egypt and the Czech Republic. Through culture, diplomacy, and people-to-people connections, the two nations continue to build a shared future of cooperation and mutual understanding.
The successful event highlighted Egypt’s soft power and cultural outreach, leaving guests with memorable impressions of Egyptian heritage, generosity, and diplomatic engagement. It was an evening that reflected the spirit of friendship and celebration, truly befitting the occasion of Egypt’s National Day.
