The quick and decisive EU reaction to Russian aggression towards Ukraine is a reflection of exactly the strength we are capable of moving forward together. The Swedish Presidency will support enhanced economic, military and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine and support Ukraine on its journey to EU membership. Maintaining this unity in strengthening support for Ukraine and sanctions against the Russian regime will be a difficult but key task. The Swedish Presidency also aims to expand cooperation in the fight against organized crime.

This year we commemorate the 30th. anniversary of the single European market. The EU must implement new reforms that will strengthen European competitiveness. The Swedish presidency wants an open economy and an ambitious free trade program with long-term and predictable rules. A competitive economy is a prerequisite for both the transition to ecological functioning and for the EU to be prepared to respond to future crises.

Climate change is one of the major global problems of our time. With joint EU solutions we can achieve the necessary results. Our ambition is to complete negotiations on the remaining parts of the EU climate package “Fit for 55”. The Swedish Presidency also wants to reduce the EU’s dependence on Russian gas and other fossil energy sources. Sweden, as a presidential country, will have to be prepared to negotiate on further extraordinary measures to tackle the energy crisis.

The Swedish Presidency will defend democracy and the rule of law and strive to preserve the common values on which the EU grew up and draws its strength. Independent judiciary and functioning democratic institutions are essential for mutual trust between Member States.
