Experts Highlight Lack of Health Knowledge among Czech Population

According to experts from the SYRI National Institute, a significant number of Czech citizens lack a detailed understanding of their health status. The institute’s scientists estimate that up to one-third of the population remains unaware of underlying health problems, such as elevated cholesterol levels or high blood sugar. Disturbingly, even when individuals are informed of these issues by a doctor, the majority fail to seek further treatment.

Michala Lustigová from SYRI emphasizes that increasing health literacy is the key to addressing this issue. Currently, the Czech population suffers heavily from diabetes and circulatory system diseases. However, public health information is generally incomplete, making it difficult to determine the focus of healthcare and prevention efforts.

Neglected risk factors within seemingly healthy individuals can lead to serious health deterioration, such as heart attacks or diabetes. In old age, the population experiences a higher burden of pain, disability, and restricted movement. To understand the overall health condition of the population, scientists rely on data from mortality rates, as well as information collected by the healthcare system regarding patients and individuals seeking medical care. However, a significant portion of health data remains unaccounted for and requires further investigation, including blood pressure measurements and analysis of various blood parameters.

Surprisingly, even when individuals at risk are notified of their health situation by a doctor, many do not receive adequate treatment. Some individuals receive treatment but find it insufficient or ineffective. To address this issue, Lustigová and her team at SYRI are conducting research on the health literacy of the population, specifically focusing on prevention. Their goal is to increase the health literacy of the Czech population and impact as many people as possible.

Lustigová emphasizes that a change in lifestyle is the key to success. Adopting a combination of elements, including a healthy diet, regular physical activity such as walking, and reducing alcohol consumption, can have a significant impact on obesity, which is a major influencing factor in overall health. By empowering individuals with knowledge and encouraging positive lifestyle changes, the aim is to improve the health outcomes of the Czech population.
