Extreme Cold Grips Czech Republic as Temperatures Plummet Below -20 °C, Heavy Snowfall Expected
The Czech Republic is in the icy grip of extreme cold as temperatures plunged below -20 °C in various areas, marking one of the coldest days this winter. According to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI), Orlické Záhoří near Rychnov nad Kněžnou recorded temperatures below -20 °C, with other regions experiencing lows around -15 °C. Notably, the coldest temperatures were observed in the Broumov and Rýmařov regions, surpassing traditionally colder locales like Šumava or the Jizerka settlement.
Meteorologists from CHMI anticipate freezing temperatures to persist until the following Wednesday, cautioning that some areas may not see temperatures rise above zero even during the day. Despite the bitter cold, weather forecasts predict further snowfall. While the exact locations of precipitation remain uncertain, models suggest that southern Bohemia and the Vysočina region could witness several tens of centimeters of snow. The entire region is expected to experience snowfall.
The peak of snowfall is forecasted for Friday and Saturday, predominantly in the southern and southwestern half of the territory, even at lower altitudes. Current snow accumulations in mountainous regions include 50 to 70 centimeters in the Krkonoše Mountains, 40 to 60 centimeters in Šumava, and approximately 30 centimeters in the Ore Mountains and Jeseníky.
The Alps are also anticipated to receive substantial snowfall, with models suggesting up to a meter of fresh snow. These extreme weather conditions prompt warnings to citizens to brace for the cold and snowy weather, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and caution in navigating the wintry conditions. As the cold spell persists and heavy snowfall looms, residents are urged to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period of severe winter weather.
