Iconic Mikulov Border Crossing Building to be Demolished Amidst D52 Highway Expansion

The historic border crossing building in Mikulov, Czech Republic, a symbol of shifting geopolitical dynamics since the fall of the Iron Curtain, is slated for demolition. The decision to raze the structure stems from its deteriorating condition and the impending highway construction, which necessitates the removal of the obsolete facility.

Having served as a crucial point for traffic between the Czech Republic and Austria, the customs house, standing for three decades, has witnessed a gradual decline in recent years. With the advent of the Schengen Agreement, the need for such a sizable structure diminished, and sporadic customs checks were replaced by occasional appearances. The recent migration crisis and measures against COVID-19 led to a temporary return of police presence, utilizing a small section of the complex as needed.

The Directorate of Roads and Highways, the current owner of the complex, has decided against preserving the building, emphasizing its obsolescence. The redevelopment plans are tied to the construction of the missing section of the D52 highway. However, the term “redevelopment” in this context signifies not the renovation of the existing extensive structure but rather its complete demolition. Subsequently, a new facility for the Police of the Czech Republic will be erected in its place, according to the spokesperson for the Directorate of Roads and Highways, Lucie Trubelíková.

Simultaneous to the Mikulov bypass creation, the highway will be rerouted around the town, connecting to the existing route of the I/52 road, with a flyover linking it to the new highway. Three roundabouts will be constructed, providing access to parking and facilities for the police. The broader project, labeled construction 5206, encompasses a 10.7-kilometer section of the highway from the Nové Mlýny reservoirs to the state border.

While the spokesperson could not provide a specific timeline for the building’s demolition, the construction of the highway has experienced significant delays. The Austrian counterparts have completed their portions, awaiting the final components for the Czech section. If current plans materialize, construction from the lakes to the border is expected to commence in 2026, with an anticipated completion date in 2029.
