Přednáška o válce na Ukrajině v rakouské rezidenci – Večer plný dojmů, ale omezeného informativního obsahu

Ve středu 12. listopadu 2025 uspořádal Svaz Rakušanů v České republice (VÖT), zastoupený Dr. Erwinem Hanslikem, společně s rakouským velvyslanectvím v Praze večerní přednášku v rezidenci Její Excelence Dr. Bettiny Kirnbauerové. Mezi hosty byli diplomaté, osobnosti veřejného života, zástupci kulturní scény a členové rakouské komunity.

Přednášející, Dr. Sergij Osačuk, první tajemník ukrajinského velvyslanectví, hovořil o svých osobních zkušenostech v souvislosti s rusko-ukrajinskou válkou. Jeho přednáška se zaměřila především na období po únoru 2022, byla emocionálně nabitá a silně ovlivněná ukrajinskou perspektivou.

Následná diskuse se do značné míry soustředila na aktuální dění. Širší historické, geopolitické a bezpečnostněpolitické kontexty, které konflikt po mnoho let formovaly, byly do značné míry ignorovány. Důležitá témata, jako je vývoj od roku 2014, převrat na Majdanu, situace na Donbasu a rozdílná hodnocení zahraničního vlivu, byla zmíněna jen zřídka.

Mnoho hostů proto shledalo večer příjemnou atmosférou, ale postrádalo hloubku. Prezentace nabídla autentický vhled do situace, nikoli však komplexní analýzu příčin konfliktu.

Po oficiální části akce pozval velvyslanec hosty na lehké jídlo s rakouskými víny, kde rozhovory pokračovaly neformálně. Organizace a pohostinnost rakouského velvyslanectví a Sdružení Rakušanů v České republice (VÖT) byly jako vždy příkladné.

Akce zdůraznila, jak náročné je prezentovat tak složité a politicky citlivé téma, jako je válka na Ukrajině, v celé jeho hloubce a komplexnosti. Pokud se vyjádří pouze jedna strana a pokud je tato strana primárně prezentována z pohledu frontové linie za deset let předcházejících událostí, vzniká jednostranný obraz. Podobně jako v podobenství o “Slepých mužích a slonovi” skupina slepých mužů – nebo mužů v naprosté tmě – zkoumá slona, ​​aby pochopila, co toto zvíře je zač. Každý zkoumá jinou část svého těla (ale každý pouze jednu část), například bok nebo kel. Poté porovnávají své zkušenosti a zjišťují, že každá jednotlivá zkušenost vede k jeho vlastnímu zcela odlišnému závěru.

To je také krásně ilustrováno v reklamě “Points of view” z roku 1986 britského deníku „The Guardian“. Z každé perspektivy to vypadá jinak. „Teprve když vidíte celý obraz, můžete plně pochopit, co se děje.“

Navíc je obtížné aplikovat náš každodenní morální rámec na chování velmocí. Lvi, leopardi, gepardi… zabíjejí mírumilovné býložravce. To je prostě „zákon džungle“. Ale nikoho by nenapadlo nazývat je z tohoto důvodu vrahy. A pokud to uděláte, musíte to aplikovat na všechny aktéry na celém světě a zjistíte, že mnozí z nich, kteří údajně patří k těm dobrým, se najednou objeví ve zcela jiném světle.

Sám jsem pořádal diskusní večery na citlivá témata s velvyslanci jako účastníky: Izrael-Palestina, Arménie-Ázerbájdžán a v roce 2014 krymský konflikt. V těchto případech jsem vždy zorganizoval alespoň dvě samostatné akce pro případ, že by se znepřátelené strany nechtěly zúčastnit jedné akce společně.

Lecture on the Ukraine War at the Austrian Residence – An Evening of Many Impressions, but Limited Informative Value

On Wednesday, November 12, 2025, the Association of Austrians in the Czech Republic (VÖT), represented by Dr. Erwin Hanslik, and the Austrian Embassy in Prague hosted an evening lecture at the residence of Her Excellency Dr. Bettina Kirnbauer. Among the guests were diplomats, public figures, representatives of the cultural scene, and members of the Austrian community.

The speaker, Dr. Sergij Osachuk, First Secretary at the Ukrainian Embassy, ​​discussed his personal experiences related to the Russo-Ukrainian War. His lecture focused primarily on the period after February 2022 and was emotionally charged and strongly influenced by the Ukrainian perspective.

The subsequent discussion remained primarily focused on current events. Broader historical, geopolitical, and security policy contexts that have shaped the conflict for many years were ignored entirely. Essential topics such as developments since 2014, the Maidan coup, the situation in Donbas, and differing assessments of foreign influence were barely mentioned.

Many guests, therefore, found the evening atmospherically pleasant but lacking in depth. The presentation offered an authentic glimpse into the situation but not a comprehensive analysis of the conflict’s causes.

After the official part of the event, the ambassador invited the audience to a light meal with excellent Austrian wines, where the conversations continued informally. The organization and hospitality of the Austrian Embassy and the Association of Austrians in the Czech Republic (VÖT) were, as always, exemplary.

The event highlighted the difficulty of presenting the war in Ukraine in all its depth and political sensitivity. If only one side is given a voice, and this perspective is primarily from the trenches, while also ignoring over a decade of the preceding events, a one-sided picture emerges. Similar to “the parable of the blind men and the elephant“, a group of blind men—or men in complete darkness—examine an elephant to understand what this animal is. Each examines a different part of its body (but each only one part), such as its flank or a tusk. They then compare their experiences and find that each experience yields a distinct conclusion.

The 1986 advertisement “Points of View” by the British newspaper “The Guardian” illustrates this very well. It looks different from every perspective. “Only when you see the whole picture can you fully understand what is happening.”

Furthermore, it isn’t easy to apply our everyday moral framework to the behavior of superpowers. Lions, leopards, cheetahs… kill peaceful herbivores and each other in territorial fights. That is simply the “law of the jungle.” But no one would think of calling them murderers for that reason. And if you do this, you have to apply it to all actors worldwide, and you’ll find that many of them, who supposedly belong to the good guys, suddenly appear in a completely different light.

I have already organized discussion evenings with ambassadors as participants on sensitive topics, including Israel-Palestine, Armenia-Azerbaijan, and, in 2014, the Crimean conflict. In these cases, I always organized at least two events in quick succession, in case the “opponents” didn’t want to appear together at a single event.

Vortrag über den Ukraine-Krieg in der österreichischen Residenz – Ein Abend mit vielen Eindrücken, aber begrenztem Informationsgehalt

Am Mittwoch, den 12. November 2025, lud die Vereinigung der Österreicher in Tschechien (VÖT), vertreten durch Dr. Erwin Hanslik, gemeinsam mit der Österreichischen Botschaft in Prag zu einem Vortragsabend in die Residenz Ihrer Exzellenz, Dr. Bettina Kirnbauer, ein. Unter den Gästen befanden sich Diplomaten, Persönlichkeiten des öffentlichen Lebens, Vertreter der Kulturszene sowie Mitglieder der österreichischen Gemeinschaft.

Als Redner sprach Dr. Dr. Sergij Osachuk, Erster Sekretär der ukrainischen Botschaft, über seine persönlichen Erfahrungen im Zusammenhang mit dem russisch‑ukrainischen Krieg. Sein Vortrag konzentrierte sich vor allem auf die Zeit nach Februar 2022 und war emotional und stark aus der ukrainischen Perspektive geprägt.

Die anschließende Diskussion blieb überwiegend an aktuellen Ereignissen orientiert. Breitere historische, geopolitische oder sicherheitspolitische Zusammenhänge, die den Konflikt seit vielen Jahren prägen, wurden vollkommen ausgeklammert. Wichtige Themen wie die Entwicklungen seit 2014, der Maidan-Putsch, die Lage im Donbass oder unterschiedliche Bewertungen ausländischer Einflussnahmen fanden kaum Erwähnung.

Viele Gäste empfanden den Abend daher als atmosphärisch angenehm, jedoch inhaltlich weniger tiefgehend. Der Vortrag bot einen authentischen Einblick, jedoch keine umfassende Analyse der Ursachen des Konflikts.

Nach dem offiziellen Teil lud die Botschafterin zu einem kleinen Imbiss mit hervorragenden österreichischen Weinen ein, bei dem die Gespräche informell weitergeführt wurden. Die Organisation, die Gastfreundschaft der österreichischen Botschaft und der Vereinigung der Österreicher in der Tschechischen Republik (VÖT) waren wie immer vorbildlich.

Die Veranstaltung machte deutlich, wie anspruchsvoll es ist, ein so komplexes und politisch sensibles Thema wie den Ukraine-Krieg in seiner gesamten Tiefe und Vielschichtigkeit darzustellen. Wenn man nur eine Seite zu Wort kommen lässt und diese hauptsächlich aus der Schützengrabenperspektive und über ein Jahrzehnt Vorgeschichte ausblendet, ergibt sich ein einseitiges Bild. Ähnlich wie im Gleichnis “Die blinden Männer und der Elefant” untersucht eine Gruppe von Blinden – oder von Männern in völliger Dunkelheit – einen Elefanten , um zu begreifen, worum es sich bei diesem Tier handelt. Jeder untersucht ein anderes Körperteil (aber jeder nur ein Teil), wie zum Beispiel die Flanke oder einen Stoßzahn. Dann vergleichen sie ihre Erfahrungen untereinander und stellen fest, dass jede individuelle Erfahrung zu ihrer eigenen, vollständig unterschiedlichen Schlussfolgerung führt.

Sehr schön zeigt das auch der Werbespot “Points of view” der britischen Tageszeitung “The Guardian” aus dem Jahr 1986. Aus jeder Perspektive sieht es anders aus. “Nur wenn man das ganze Bild sieht, kann man vollständig verstehen, was passiert.”

Außerdem ist es schwierig, unser moralisches Bezugssystem aus dem Alltag auf das Verhalten von Großmächten anzuwenden. Löwen, Leoparden, Geparden… töten friedliche Pflanzenfresser und sich gegenseitig in Revierkämpfen. Das ist nun einmal das “Gesetz des Dschungels”. Aber keiner wird auf die Idee kommen, sie deshalb als Mörder zu bezeichnen. Und wenn man es tut, muss man es auf alle Akteure weltweit anwenden, und man wird feststellen, dass viele von ihnen, die vermeintlich zu den Guten gehören, auf einmal in ganz anderem Licht erscheinen.

Ich habe selbst bereits zu sensiblen Themen Diskussionsabende mit Botschaftern als Teilnehmer organisiert: Israel-Palästina, Armenien-Aserbaidschan sowie 2014 den Krimkonflikt. Dazu habe ich dann zumindest immer zwei verschiedene Veranstaltungen kurz hintereinander organisiert, falls die “Kontrahenten” nicht auf einem Event zusammen auftreten wollten.
