Minister Lipavský met the new Slovak Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Juraj Blanár, in Prague

On Monday, 6 November 2023, Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský met his Slovak colleague, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Juraj Blanár on his first foreign visit after his appointment to the Slovak Cabinet.

“The Minister and I agreed today that the Czechia and Slovakia are linked not only by the past, but above all by the future, both in Central Europe and in the EU and NATO,” the Czech diplomatic chief said at the beginning of the meeting.

The ministers discussed mutual cooperation in the security and defence area, especially in the context of the war situation in Ukraine, the Middle East, Israel and the Gaza Strip.

The diplomatic chiefs highlighted the special relationship that the two countries share and the basis for intensive bilateral cooperation. The ministers agreed to promote this relationship through strategic dialogue between the governments of both countries and to support concrete projects that would further link Czech and Slovak civil society. “We must continue to look for new forms of cooperation that will contribute to maintaining the extraordinary nature of our relations,” Minister Lipavský said.

In the meeting, both ministers confirmed their interest in continuing and deepening regional cooperation, especially in the formats of the Visegrad Four, of which Poland and Hungary are members in addition to the Czechia and Slovakia, and where the Czechia currently holds the presidency. They also addressed membership of the Slavkov format, which develops relations between the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria.
