Nurofen syrup for children will not be available until March

Nurofen syrup for children, a medication used to reduce fever and relieve headaches, toothaches, earaches, sore throats and postoperative pain, will not be available until mid-March 2023, according to the State Institute for Drug Control. The manufacturer, Reckitt Benckiser, has said the unavailability is due to “production reasons.”

The company is also not currently supplying suppositories, and has not specified a date for when production will resume. Pharmacies are advising customers on the unavailability of the medication and suggesting alternative options. The shortage is the third since May, raising concerns among pharmacists, who have urged parents not to give their children adult-dose ibuprofen.

The Health Ministry is considering a legislative change to limit shortages of essential drugs, by requiring distributors to keep a stock of them for several weeks.
