Orban’s Obstruction: EU Accession for Ukraine and War Aid Hang in the Balance

Orban prevents Ukraine from joining the EU and demands the cancellation of financial war aid for Ukraine

Hungarian Prime Minister Orban further intensifies the dispute with the European Union.

In a letter to EU Council President Michel, he demanded that the two main decisions in support of Ukraine be removed from the agenda of the Brussels Summit in mid-December. Otherwise, the summit is threatened with failure, Orban said. According to the Hungarian head of government, forcing a decision on the issues could jeopardise unity in the EU.

Orban calls for the planned starting signal for the EU accession negotiations with Ukraine to be put on hold. The EU Commission’s proposal to support Ukraine with a further 50 billion euros and to increase the multiannual budgetary framework for this is also not ready for decision.
