Prague City Council to Rename 21 Streets for Improved Orientation and Residential Developments

The City of Prague is set to rename 21 streets, according to a document recently approved by the Prague City Council. These streets are mainly newly created roads or previously unnamed streets, and the need to name them has arisen due to the construction of residential and family houses, as well as to improve orientation for residents and visitors. The newly named streets include Huppnerova and Stočesova Street in Prague 6, and Cigánkova Street in Prague 11.

The construction of extensive residential developments has necessitated the naming of many streets, such as Na Výrovně, Hasilova, Bělohlávkova, Cazovská, and Toufarova in Řeporyje, as well as Pavla Beneše, Jana Mikuly, Jana Vlčka, and Karel Dlouhý streets in Prague 18. In Prague 6, the new street Ke Kaplance will also be named, among others, for orientation reasons.

The city council approves the naming or renaming of public spaces in Prague, and anyone can submit proposals for names. The relevant district council discusses the proposals and forwards them to the Municipal Topographic Commission for further review. If approved, the proposals are then discussed by the Prague City Council. According to the law, public spaces cannot be named after living individuals.

Renaming public spaces is not a new practice in Prague. In the previous election period, part of Korunovační Street in front of the Russian embassy was renamed to Ukrainian Heroes in support of Ukraine, which had been attacked by Russia. Similarly, Prague 3 has requested that Koněvova Street be renamed to Hartigova after the first Žižkov mayor, but this has not yet been done.

Renaming streets and public spaces is an important aspect of urban planning, as it helps improve the navigation of the city and its residents’ quality of life. By providing clear and distinctive names, residents and visitors alike can easily navigate and identify different areas of the city. Additionally, renaming public spaces can also reflect the values and history of the city, as seen with the renaming of Korunovační Street.

Overall, the renaming of 21 streets in Prague is a positive step towards improving the city’s infrastructure and public spaces, and it will help make Prague a more accessible and navigable city for residents and visitors alike.
