Prague Neighborhoods of Letňany, Kbely, and Prosek Set for Major Transformations

The neighborhoods of Letňany, Kbely, and Prosek in Prague are poised for significant transformations in the coming years, as urban planners and city authorities aim to reshape these areas. The local authorities are actively seeking input from residents to ensure that the changes align with their desires and needs. The vision is to create communities that will be unrecognizable from their current state in a short span of time.

While the development plans for these neighborhoods have been in the works for several years, recent events have sparked renewed interest and urgency. Various politicians have proposed ambitious ideas for the unused land in the area. Former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš suggested the concept of a “government town,” where all ministries and government buildings would be consolidated in one central location. Simultaneously, the city council has advocated for the construction of a cutting-edge hospital that would serve Prague and the surrounding region.

To oversee the planning and development process, the Institute for Planning and Development in Prague has taken charge. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that this is a long-term project that demands patience and concerted efforts. The first step involves conducting a territorial study to ascertain the specific requirements and expectations for the future development of these neighborhoods.

The Institute emphasizes the significance of public participation, particularly that of the residents, throughout the development process. In addition to input from transportation specialists and experts in education, sports, health, and social policy, the Institute seeks the opinions and insights of residents in Prague districts 18, 19, 9, and Čakovice.

The Institute has already commenced engaging with residents through various avenues. Public discussions, urban planner-guided walks, lectures, and community gatherings have been organized in different neighborhoods. During the initial phase of the public debate, the residents’ perspectives will be prioritized, encouraging them to share their thoughts and ideas.

One such public discussion took place on May 11th at Ekocentrum Prales in Kbelích, focusing on the study of natural biodiversity. Another meeting is scheduled for May 16th at the Prague 9 city hall. Additionally, the Institute has planned a discussion evening on June 7th, followed by a family picnic and sports event on June 10th.

By actively involving residents in the decision-making process, the aim is to create vibrant and sustainable neighborhoods that cater to the aspirations and requirements of the community. The comprehensive engagement initiatives by the Institute underscore the commitment to inclusive and participatory urban development. The residents of Letňany, Kbely, and Prosek have a unique opportunity to shape the future of their neighborhoods and contribute to the realization of a thriving and livable urban environment.
