Pro-Russian vs. loyal opposition

Pres. Jan Doležal of the Agrarian Chamber wrote in MFD on Jan. 9 that German farmers had decided that enough was enough, and he wondered when Czech farmers and others in the CR would also decide that they had had enough of their government. Doležal’s message couldn’t have been clearer. In this same spirit, hundreds of tractors rolled into Prague today, but Doležal isn’t supporting the protest. He told TV Nova yesterday that he doesn’t like the organizers or the political overtones. PM Petr Fiala told Deník last week that the organizers are “anti-government, pro-Russian forces.” Agriculture Min. Marek Výborný told LN that one of the main organizers, union leader Bohumír Dufek, poses a security risk. Doležal clearly decided that he didn’t want to be lumped into the same category, so he has become part of the loyal opposition. It’s similar to Russia, where the real opposition is stigmatized and perse- cuted, and the loyal opposition gets cuddled for helping to perpetuate the system of power.
