Reception of the Embassy of Japan on the Occasion of the National Day of Japan

On Monday, 13 February, the Embassy of Japan hosted a distinguished reception at the Marriott Hotel to celebrate Japan’s National Day, marking the birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan. The event brought together members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of government and business, as well as cultural figures and friends of Japan for an evening characterized by dignity, elegance, and warm hospitality.

In his welcoming address, H. E. Kansuke NAGAOKA emphasized the deepening ties between Japan and the host country, highlighting cooperation in trade, advanced technologies, innovation, and cultural exchange. He underlined Japan’s commitment to international stability, multilateral cooperation, and economic partnership.

Japan’s National Day is inseparably linked with the person of the Emperor, or Tennō, whose role embodies the historical continuity and cultural identity of the Japanese nation. His Majesty Emperor Naruhito ascended the Chrysanthemum Throne in 2019, inaugurating the Reiwa era following the abdication of his father, Emperor Emeritus Akihito. The Japanese imperial institution is regarded as the world’s oldest continuing hereditary monarchy, with legendary origins traditionally tracing back more than two millennia.

Throughout Japan’s long history—from the classical imperial court culture through the era of the shogunate to the profound transformation during the Meiji Restoration—the Emperor has symbolized national unity. Following the Second World War, Japan adopted its 1947 Constitution, which redefined the Emperor as ‘the symbol of the State and of the unity of the people,’ without political governing power. This constitutional framework has allowed Japan to combine historical continuity with modern democratic governance.

The imperial family today is deeply engaged in cultural, humanitarian, and international activities. Empress Masako, with her diplomatic background and global outlook, represents Japan’s commitment to dialogue and international understanding.

The reception itself reflected Japan’s unique balance between tradition and innovation. Guests enjoyed refined Japanese culinary specialties, including sushi, tempura, and traditional sweets, accompanied by sake and Japanese whisky. Conversations throughout the evening demonstrated the strong interest in further expanding economic, technological, and cultural cooperation.

The celebration of the Emperor’s birthday is more than a ceremonial event. It symbolizes stability, respect for history, and a forward-looking vision for the future. 長岡寛介大使は歓迎の挨拶の中で、日本とホスト国との絆が深まっていることを強調し、貿易、先端技術、イノベーション、そして文化交流における協力を強調しました。また、国際社会の安定、多国間協力、そして経済連携への日本のコミットメントを強調しました。
