Restoration of the Temple of St. Archangel Michael in Prague to Begin After Public Collection Raises Over 1.9 Million CZK
The Temple of St. Archangel Michael in Prague’s Kinsky Garden is set to be restored after being destroyed in a fire two and a half years ago. The public collection, which lasted for one year, raised over 1.9 million CZK for the restoration of the church’s interior. The estimated cost of construction is around 30 to 40 million CZK, but the final price has yet to be determined.
Despite the coronavirus pandemic, donors continued to contribute to the restoration efforts. The collected funds demonstrate the public’s care for this unique sacred monument, valued for its architecture and place of origin. The restoration of the temple is expected to start next year, following the City Hall’s receipt of a building permit in May.
The Temple of St. Archangel Michael, also known as the Carpathian St. Michael’s Little Church, was a wooden Orthodox church built in the second half of the 17th century. The church was made entirely of wood and had a 17-meter-high spire. It was built in the Boyko architectural style with elements of folk Baroque and had three onion domes, the tallest of which measured 17 meters. Initially, it was a Greek Catholic church but was later designated as Orthodox due to the historic merger of the Greek Catholic Church with the Orthodox Church. The church was part of the National Museum’s ethnographic department collections in Prague.
The restoration of the Temple of St. Archangel Michael will help restore this unique monument to its former glory. It has significant cultural and historical value, making its restoration a crucial project for the City of Prague. The reconstructed temple will be an essential decoration of the Kinsky Garden, a place of worship, and a cultural heritage site for future generations to appreciate.
