Scheduled Strike Threatens Transportation Disruptions in Prague on November 27th

A planned strike by trade and labor unions on Monday, November 27th, is poised to impact transportation in Prague. Three major gatherings are scheduled at Palach Square and Malostranské Square, with a smaller one at Jungmann Square, potentially causing disruptions to daily commutes.

While the official start time announced by organizers is 8 am, city hall information indicates that the assemblies will not commence until 1 pm, as organizers conduct preparatory work at the sites. This preparatory phase may limit transportation from the morning, starting around 11 am.

The event at Malostranské Square is expected to conclude at 2:30 pm, with potential transportation disturbances lasting from 11 am to 3 pm. Consequently, the diversion of city public transport routes is not ruled out.

Deputy Mayor Zdeněk Hřib (Pirates) assured that the large strike on November 27th is projected to minimally affect Prague’s public transport, as trade union organizations of transport company employees are not participating in the strike. Some employees plan to express their protest against government cuts verbally or symbolically by wearing warning vests.

Hřib emphasized that if there are diversions from the usual routes of established lines due to increased movement of people around the city, the transport company will promptly inform passengers on its website.

A gathering is also expected at the Government Office, with all meetings overseen by the Czech Police, who have the authority to operationally direct or stop traffic if necessary. City police officers will also be present. Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda (ODS) convened a meeting on Wednesday to coordinate the approach of city hall, the transport company, Czech Police, city police, and others to minimize the impact on transportation and Prague’s residents. The collaboration aims to ensure that disruptions are kept to a minimum during the strike.
