State Officials and Administration of Railways (SŽ) Unveil Plans for New Railway Bridge at Výtoň with Preservation Focus

In a recent interview, Transport Minister Martin Kupka disclosed ambitious plans for the construction of a new railway bridge at Výtoň, coupled with efforts to find a suitable alternative location for the existing bridge, ensuring its preservation and continued functionality. The revelation comes after the results of an architectural competition laid the foundation for the new bridge’s design, emphasizing both modern functionality and cultural heritage considerations.

The state’s commitment to cultural preservation is underscored by its intention to subject the new bridge project to an internationally recognized assessment of its impact on cultural heritage. Further, negotiations are in progress with UNESCO, emphasizing the importance of aligning the project with global heritage preservation standards.

Last year, the announcement of the SŽ competition results triggered criticism regarding the potential replacement of the culturally protected structure. However, Minister Kupka moved to allay concerns, affirming the government’s acknowledgment of the current bridge’s cultural significance. “We will continue with the intentions of the architectural competition, fully recognizing the cultural value of the current bridge. There will be no removal of the truss riveted structure,” assured Kupka, highlighting the commitment to preserving the historical aspects of the existing bridge.

Crucially, the preservation efforts extend beyond sentiment, with a concrete plan for the relocation of the culturally significant but deteriorating bridge. Prague authorities are actively exploring two potential locations in Modřany, both above and below the lock chamber, where ferries currently operate. The aim is to repurpose the existing bridge as a pedestrian and cyclist bridge in a new setting, ensuring its continued utility while respecting its cultural value.

This strategic approach not only addresses the infrastructural needs of the region but also aligns with the broader vision of cultural preservation and sustainable urban development. As negotiations progress and plans materialize, the collaborative efforts of state officials and the Administration of Railways signify a balanced approach to infrastructure development that values the past while building for the future.
