Surge in Popularity: Paid Streaming Services Witness 50% Growth in Czech Republic, Favored by the Youth

Paid streaming services are experiencing a remarkable surge in popularity in the Czech Republic, with approximately 35 percent of people over the age of 16 engaging in movie or series consumption through these platforms in 2023. This marks a substantial 50 percent increase from the previous year, signaling a clear shift in consumer behavior. The data, released by the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ) earlier this spring, highlights a significant transformation from just two years ago when only 15 percent of the population utilized paid channels such as Netflix or HBO.

Demographically, the most avid consumers of movies and series on paid streaming services are individuals between the ages of 16 and 24, closely followed by those in the 25 to 34 age bracket. More than half of both these age groups are now regular users of paid streaming platforms. Moreover, the data indicates that university graduates are among the most frequent viewers, with approximately every second person in this group engaging with videos on paid platforms.

The rise in smartphone and internet users has also been notable, with a one-percentage-point increase compared to the previous year. Additionally, the proportion of online shoppers has seen a two-percentage-point increase. The ubiquity of mobile phones remains steadfast, with 99 percent of people over 16 using them. Notably, 82 percent of individuals now use smartphones, while 18 percent still opt for classic button phones, showcasing the evolving technology landscape.

Among those up to 64 years old, an impressive 95 percent own a smartphone. Even among seniors over 75, there has been a significant shift, with 24 percent now utilizing smartphones compared to just four percent five years ago.

In terms of internet connectivity, 87 percent of households in the Czech Republic are now connected, marking a two-percentage-point increase from the previous year. Nearly all households with children and young households without children have internet access, while 56 percent of senior households are connected. Mobile phones remain the most common device for internet access, with 78 percent of people using them, followed by internet access via laptops, which is utilized by 66 percent of the population. The evolving landscape of digital entertainment and connectivity reflects the changing preferences and habits of Czech consumers, particularly the younger demographic.
