The Impact of Social Media on Young People’s Mental Health: Experts Urge for Prevention and Parental Involvement
Experts are highlighting the negative impact of social media on the mental health of young people. According to a psychotherapist Tomáš Kvapilík, individuals who spend extended periods on social media platforms such as TikTok or Facebook are more likely to develop symptoms such as anxiety, depression, loneliness, and sleep disorders. The National Institute of Mental Health (NÚDZ) survey showed that the number of people with mental health problems rose from 20% to 33% between 2017 and 2020. Jana Klusáková from the nonprofit organization Replug.me has also noted the impact of social media on people’s mental health. Younger people are more affected by prolonged internet use and experience sleep disorders, depression, anxiety, and self-harm.
The Replug.me survey found that 80% of parents do not talk to their children about the online world. The vast majority of parents with children do not discuss critical issues such as how social media affects our lives. Klusáková recommends parents take an interest in their children’s online activities and engage in conversations about their experiences, teach them to be mindful of their time spent on social media, and encourage them to seek alternative activities to promote their well-being.
While social media platforms have brought people closer and allowed them to connect with others, it has also led to several adverse effects on mental health. Social media users have become addicted to their screens and may feel like they are missing out when not online, leading to mental health issues. Individuals are increasingly turning to social media for entertainment and relaxation, but it can have severe implications on mental health, particularly for young people.
To address the issue of deteriorating mental health among young people, experts and nonprofit organizations have launched campaigns to raise awareness and provide preventive measures to people who frequent social media platforms. The educational campaign “I am good” aims to provide awareness and preventive measures to young people who frequently use social media platforms. It is essential to be aware of the impact of social media on mental health and take action to address it. Parents and schools can play a vital role in teaching young people how to manage their screen time and promoting their well-being. By taking a balanced approach to social media usage, individuals can maintain their mental health and overall well-being.
