Ambasada României în Republica Cehă

165 years at SMALL UNION
January 24, 1859 – January 24, 2023
Every year, on January 24, we celebrate the Union of the Romanian Principality since 1859 – also called “Little Union”, made under the leadership of the ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza, an act of political will of the two Romanian principals, Moldova and the Romanian Country.
On January 17, 1859, elections were held in Ia ,i, in Moldova, and the new ruler was appointed Alexandru Ioan Cuza. A week from now, on January 24, 1859, elections were held in Bucharest, with Alexandru Ioan Cuza elected.
Alexandru Ioan Cuza became the ruler of the two principals, and their union was recognized by the great powers during his reign. Thus, together with the internal efforts to realize the national ideal, the union of the Romanian principals was, at the same time, the result of intense diplomatic activity.
After 165 years, the day of January 24 makes us again commemorate, with pride, this first stage in the creation of the modern Romanian unitary state.
Happy Birthday, Romania ! Happy Birthday, Romanians!
