Beloved Pine Forests near Bolevec Ponds in Plzeň Face Crisis Due to Prolonged Drought

The cherished pine forests surrounding the Bolevec ponds in Plzeň, Czech Republic, are grappling with a severe crisis as a result of an extended dry spell. The impact of this year’s prolonged drought has led to a notable increase in the number of dead and dying trees in this popular recreational area, significantly altering the landscape of Plzeň.

Richard Havelka from the city’s Public Estate Administration underscores the gravity of the situation, noting a substantial rise in the number of dead trees. Two years ago, the affected area amounted to three hundred to four hundred cubic meters, and this year, it has surged to around a thousand cubic meters. In practical terms, this translates to the need to fell approximately four hectares of forest. Havelka emphasizes that while the felling process will be extensive, it won’t entail a wholesale clearing, as the dead trees are scattered throughout the forest.

The prolonged drought’s impact is gradual, with trees exhibiting delayed reactions. The past two years have been particularly harsh, and Havelka anticipates a similar scenario in the coming year. Loggers are set to commence the felling of affected trees at the beginning of the next year, with the aim of completing the removal of dead trees by spring.

Most of the harvested wood will be sold, with approximately a fifth to a quarter designated for firewood. Despite the challenges faced by the pine forests, Havelka offers reassurance that the drought has not significantly harmed the city’s Christmas tree plantations. Young trees have proven to be more resilient, and as a result, around six hundred trees will be available for sale starting December 2, maintaining the tradition observed in previous years.
