Congress of Czech lawyers after more than 90 years
On May 5, 2022, representatives of all chambers and associations met in the Great Hall of Prague’s Karolina to renew the tradition of the Congress of Czech Lawyers after less than a century and to establish a modern collegial dialogue between lawyers across professions in order to reflect more deeply on the principles. The tradition was interrupted by the Second World War, but in the surrounding states this congress takes place regularly.
Former head of the Czech Bar Association, Vladimír Jirousek, came up with the idea of resuming the congress. According to him, the congresses could take place in such a way that the individual sections present legislative concepts on them, which will become a respected basis for both legislators and public administration, as well as society.
Pavel Rychetský In the opening speech of the congress, the chairman of the Union of Czech Lawyers recalled: These preconditions are the ideas of justice, democracy and human dignity. I therefore do not consider it unnecessary to reiterate that a democratic rule of law is primarily conditional on the principles of protection of fundamental rights and freedoms. “
Subsequently, the Speaker of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, RNDr. Miloš Vystrčil, then Rector of Charles University, Professor MUDr. Milena Králíčková, Ph.D., and Vice-Rector of Charles University, Professor JUDr. Jan Kuklík, DrSc. Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen JUDr. PhDr. Stanislav Balík, Ph.D., then enriched the program with a lecture explaining the history of legal congresses in the Czech lands and in Slovakia.
Press conference was also held during the congress, which was attended by JUDr. Lenka Bradáčová, JUDr. Vladimir Jirousek, JUDr. Pavel Rychetský and Mgr. Daniela Zemanová.
The chairman of the Union of Czech Lawyers, Dr. Rychetský, on behalf of the organizers of the renewed congress, expressed his joy at the fact that chambers and associations of lawyers had been gathered, building on the history of the last century and the tradition of dialogue. “Lawyers are called to defend and defend values such as law and justice and to abide by them. We feel a joint responsibility for their observance and sharing not only across the country, but also in Europe and the whole world, “said JUDr. Rychetský.
