Czech Archaeologists Unearth 3000-Year-Old Mayan City, Yax Balam, in Guatemala Expedition

Guatemala City, Guatemala – Czech archaeologists, funded by the Neuron Foundation, have made a groundbreaking discovery in the Petén province of Guatemala, unearthing one of the oldest Mayan cities using cutting-edge technologies. The expedition, conducted last summer, revealed remnants of the city believed to be 3000 years old, shedding light on the advanced civilization of early Mayan history.

Named Yax Balam, translating to ‘First Jaguar’ in reference to Mayan symbolism where the jaguar signifies power associated with the underworld, the city spans an impressive seven square kilometers. The findings showcase the richness of Mayan culture and its historical significance.

The archaeological team, led by Ladislav Šilhán, an expert in 3D visualization of Mayan centers, and Milan Kováč, the head of the Center for Mesoamerican Studies at Comenius University in Bratislava, utilized a combination of traditional archaeological research, aerial imaging, artificial intelligence, and neural networks. The integration of LiDAR laser technology facilitated the identification of palaces, sculptures, remnants of rituals, astronomical observatories, and various artifacts within the city.

Yax Balam, identified as a regional center, flourished between 850 BC and 150 AD, marking different phases of Mayan history from the establishment of kingdoms and the first city-states to the eventual Mayan collapse that led to the civilization’s disappearance.

The Neuron Foundation, dedicated to supporting Czech scientists, allocated nearly 900,000 koruna in funding for this archaeological expedition. The discovery not only underscores the significance of investing in such explorations but also highlights the potential of modern technologies, including artificial intelligence and aerial imaging, in unraveling the mysteries of ancient civilizations. As Yax Balam offers a glimpse into the Mayan past, it deepens our understanding of the cultural and historical tapestry woven by this ancient civilization.
