Czech Press Photo won the photos from the massacre in Bucha, Ukraine

Prague – The main prize of the Czech Press Photo 2022 competition was won by freelance photographer Vojtěch Dárvík’s “Máca Massacre in Buč.” The picture, which was selected from over 6,000 works submitted by 234 authors, depicts a murdered resident of Buč lying on the street with a dog sitting next to him.

The international jury deemed it important to show such visual material to raise awareness about the horrific events in Ukrainian cities of Bucha and Irpin. The majority of the prize-winning images were from Ukraine, including the News category and all three first places in the Reportage category.

The People and Environment category was dominated by the fire in Bohemian Switzerland. The chairman of the jury, Petr Mlch, stated that the jury chose to show the reality of the war in Ukraine, as it is only the people in Ukraine who are exposed to the full horror of the conflict. Vojtěch Dárvík Máca spoke about his creation of the photograph, saying it was taken in Buča where a mass grave with over 300 bodies of civilian victims was found.

The exhibition of the best images from the photojournalism competition will be on display at the National Museum until the end of July.
