Czech Republic Faces Prolonged Severe Frosts: Meteorologists Extend Warning for Moravia, Silesia, and Southern Bohemia

The Czech Republic remains in the grip of severe frosts, with the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) extending its warning for intense cold temperatures in Moravia, Silesia, and regions in the south and southeast of Bohemia. Meteorologists anticipate temperatures dropping below -12 °C, particularly in the southeastern half of the country, with occasional lows of around -15 °C in the northeast from Wednesday evening to Thursday morning.

This updated warning expands the coverage compared to the previous one, which expired on Wednesday morning and originally focused on the country’s northeast, Highlands, and south of Bohemia. The current alert encompasses additional regions west of Bohemia and across Moravia. Affected areas include the Highlands, Moravian-Silesian, Olomouc, Zlín, South Moravian, and South Bohemian regions, along with parts of Pardubice, Plzeň, and Central Bohemia, lasting until Thursday morning.

Meteorologists anticipate a milder trend in the following days, with daytime temperatures hovering around zero. However, smog remains a concern in the Moravian-Silesian region due to deteriorated dispersion conditions caused by a strong inversion and minimal wind flow.

In Prague, a flood watch is in effect until Wednesday evening. Meanwhile, in Český Krumlov, fluctuations in the Vltava water level around the third degree of flood activity are expected due to manipulations in the Lipno reservoir water level.

The prolonged severe frosts raise challenges for residents and authorities, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and adherence to safety measures in the affected regions. The impact on transportation, agriculture, and public services underscores the comprehensive effects of the ongoing extreme weather conditions in the Czech Republic.
