Czech Retail Sales Continue to Fall in September

The Czech Republic’s retail sales declined for the fifth straight month in September, data from the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO) showed on Tuesday.

Retail sales, except motor vehicles and motorcycles, fell a calendar-adjusted 5.6% year-on-year in September, slower than the 6.7% decrease in August.

Sales of food, beverages and tobacco fell 5.3% and those of non-food products decreased 5.8%.

Retail sales of automotive fuel in specialized stores declined 6.1%. Meanwhile, sales and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles showed an increase of 1%.

Data also showed that retail sales via mail order or internet dropped 3.6%. On a monthly basis, retail sales moved up 0.8% in September.

Unemployment in Czechia stood at 3.5% in October, the same level it was at the previous month, the Czech Radio reported citing official figures released on Tuesday.

The number of people out of work remained at around 256,000. It is still lower than the number of unfilled positions, which last month was over 297,000.
