Tourists from the Czech Republic are being urged to exercise caution when travelling to Mexico after a number of Czech nationals were denied entry to the country. Yoga instructor Mirka Bláhová and her friend Iva were recently denied entry, despite having valid documentation and travel plans. Immigration officials reportedly detained the women and kept them in what they described as “disciplinary camp” conditions, taking their phones and preventing them from contacting either their embassy or their families. The women were returned to Europe after just one day in the country. The Czech embassy has been criticized for its perceived lack of support for tourists, but embassy officials point out that the Mexican authorities have not responded to their inquiries regarding the detentions. Mexican authorities have denied entry to dozens of Czech nationals in recent months, in some cases reportedly over minor discrepancies in travel plans or luggage. In some instances, officials have questioned travellers about their itinerary or their knowledge of Mayan culture in order to justify the denial of entry. The situation has prompted warnings from the Czech embassy and the country’s ombudsman, urging visitors to Mexico to exercise caution and be prepared for possible complications. Bláhová and Iva have expressed their distress at their treatment, particularly their inability to contact anyone outside of their detention. Their experience highlights the importance of ensuring that travel documents are in order, and that travellers are aware of the requirements and expectations of their destination country. In the case of Mexico, some travellers have reported difficulties with border officials despite having all necessary documentation, so visitors may wish to consider contacting their embassy prior to travel in order to ensure they are prepared for all eventualities.
