eDoklady Mobile App Surpasses 130,000 Users in Czech Republic, Exceeding Expectations
The eDoklady mobile application, enabling users to carry their ID card digitally on their mobile devices, has witnessed rapid adoption in the Czech Republic, with over 130,000 people embracing the technology. Launched recently, the app has exceeded the expectations set by the Ministry for Local Development, showcasing a strong uptake from the public.
Developed to facilitate citizens in verifying their identity using a digital ID across various institutions, the app’s popularity surged over a weekend, surpassing initial expectations and leading to some glitches in service. In response to the increased demand, the Digital and Information Agency, a co-developer of the application, has been actively optimizing the app’s infrastructure. Martin Mesršmíd, director of the agency, highlighted ongoing adjustments, stating, “We are constantly fine-tuning it, adding memory, adding servers, optimizing wherever we can handle the load.”
Despite its success, the app has faced criticism, with some viewing it as a new form of digital control. Minister for Local Development Ivan Bartoš, however, dismissed such claims, emphasizing that the plastic ID card remains a valid alternative. He stated, “This is a variant for someone who only decides to carry a mobile phone in their pocket.”
In its initial phase, eDoklady is applicable at central administrative offices, primarily ministries. By the second half of the year, the app is expected to be accepted at police stations and labor offices. Future plans for the app include the addition of driver’s licenses, expanding its functionality and convenience for users.
