A Celebration of Friendship, History and Diplomacy in Prague

On 15 July, the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt hosted an elegant National Day Reception at the official residence of H.E. Mahmoud Mostafa Afifi in the prestigious Vinohrady district of Prague. The occasion was particularly significant, as it also served as the Ambassador’s Farewell Reception, bringing together members of the diplomatic corps, senior representatives of Czech public life, business leaders and friends of Egypt to celebrate both the country’s National Day and Ambassador Afifi’s successful tenure in the Czech Republic.

The Ambassador’s residence, located in Italská Street, is regarded as one of Prague’s most beautiful diplomatic residences. Its magnificent garden, overlooking the Czech capital, provided a spectacular setting for a warm summer evening of conversation, friendship and cultural exchange. Guests enjoyed Egyptian hospitality in an atmosphere combining elegance with genuine warmth.

Among the distinguished guests were numerous ambassadors accredited to the Czech Republic, senior officials, members of parliament, representatives of business, academia and the cultural community. One of the keynote speeches was delivered by Karel Havlíček, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic, who highlighted the long-standing friendship between the Czech Republic and Egypt and the importance of strengthening economic cooperation, investment and political dialogue.

Egypt celebrates its National Day on 23 July, commemorating the Revolution of 1952. Led by the Free Officers Movement, the revolution marked a turning point in modern Egyptian history, ending the monarchy and paving the way for the establishment of the Republic. Since then, 23 July has symbolized national sovereignty, reform and the country’s determination to shape its own future. Every year, Egyptian embassies around the world commemorate this historic milestone by bringing together friends and partners of Egypt.

H.E. Mahmoud Mostafa Afifi has enjoyed a distinguished diplomatic career within the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Throughout his service, he has represented Egypt in a variety of senior diplomatic assignments and has worked to promote political dialogue, economic cooperation and cultural understanding. During his tenure in Prague, he became a respected and highly regarded member of the diplomatic community, known for his professionalism, accessibility and commitment to strengthening Egyptian-Czech relations.

Under Ambassador Afifi’s leadership, the Embassy actively promoted cooperation in trade, investment, tourism, culture and higher education. Egypt remains one of the Czech Republic’s most important partners in North Africa and the Middle East. Bilateral trade continues to expand, while growing numbers of Czech tourists visit Egypt each year to enjoy the Red Sea resorts, the Nile Valley, Luxor, Aswan, Cairo and the country’s unparalleled archaeological heritage.

Modern Egypt combines one of the world’s oldest civilizations with an ambitious program of economic development. Landmark projects, including the expansion of the Suez Canal, major infrastructure investments, new industrial zones, and the construction of the New Administrative Capital, illustrate the country’s long-term vision. At the same time, the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum near the Giza Pyramids further strengthens Egypt’s position as one of the world’s leading cultural and tourism destinations.

The farewell reception therefore became much more than a diplomatic celebration. It offered an opportunity to acknowledge Ambassador Afifi’s contribution to Czech-Egyptian relations while celebrating Egypt’s remarkable history, cultural heritage and modern achievements. The evening demonstrated once again that diplomacy is built not only through official meetings but also through personal friendships, mutual respect and meaningful cultural encounters.

Ambassador Mahmoud Mostafa Afifi is widely regarded as one of Egypt’s most accomplished career diplomats. Having devoted more than three decades to the Egyptian diplomatic service, he has built an impressive career combining legal expertise, international diplomacy, public communication and cultural engagement. Before presenting his credentials as Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the Czech Republic in February 2023, he held a number of senior positions within the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and served abroad in key diplomatic assignments, including at the Embassy of Egypt in London and at Egypt’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva. He also became well known throughout the Arab world as the official spokesperson for the League of Arab States in Cairo, a highly visible position requiring exceptional diplomatic skills and the ability to communicate complex regional issues with clarity and balance.

Throughout his career, Ambassador Afifi has consistently promoted dialogue, international cooperation and mutual understanding. His diplomatic philosophy is firmly rooted in the belief that successful foreign relations are built not only through political negotiations, but also through cultural exchange, academic cooperation, tourism and strong economic partnerships. Since arriving in Prague, he has worked actively to further strengthen the traditionally friendly relations between Egypt and the Czech Republic, encouraging closer cooperation in trade, investment, science, education and archaeology while also supporting numerous cultural initiatives that bring the peoples of both countries closer together. His approachable personality, thoughtful manner and extensive international experience have earned him considerable respect within Prague’s diplomatic community, where he is widely appreciated as a highly professional, accessible and forward-looking representative of Egypt.

With impeccable organization, gracious hospitality, outstanding cuisine and the unforgettable setting of the Ambassador’s residence overlooking Prague, the reception ranked among the most distinguished diplomatic events of this year’s summer season and provided a fitting farewell to an Ambassador who leaves behind many friends in the Czech Republic.
