Fiala’s secret weapon

Of the 10 countries that joined the European Union 20 years ago, Commission Pres. Ursula von der Leyen chose the CR as the one to visit on this special occasion. She and PM Petr Fiala opened a gala concert at the Rudolfinum on Tues. night. This will no doubt fuel the speculation that Fiala has a chance to become the head of the EU Council after the elections in June. Fiala rejected such thoughts, but that didn’t do anything to slow down the talk. What could Fiala, as the head of a mid-size European country, bring to the table? His secret weapon is perhaps the promise he received at the White House from U.S. Pres. Joe Biden (as revealed by National Security Adviser Tomáš Pojar at 18:50) that there won’t be any significant reductions in exports of American LNG to Europe. If Fiala was able to convince Biden to reverse his decision to pause permits for new LNG facilities, he would be a true hero. So why isn’t anyone talking about this? Maybe what Biden really promised Fiala was lost in translation.
