Former Czech PM Babiš to take on retired NATO general in presidential runoff

The Czech Republic’s presidential elections will proceed to a second round, as none of the eight candidates were able to secure a majority in the first round of voting held on January 22-23. The two front runners, former Prime Minister Andrej Babis and retired NATO General Petr Pavel, will now face off in the run-off on January 27-28. Pavel received 35.4% of the vote, while Babis received 35%. Economist Danuse Nerudova came in third with 13.9% of the vote.

The winner of the second round will replace outgoing President Milos Zeman.
