Former Deputy Ambassador Kateřina Fialková passed away

We are saddened to announce that our colleague Kateřina Fialková, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Switzerland and Liechtenstein, suddenly passed away in Bern on Tuesday, November 1 at the age of 55. Ambassador Fialková joined Czech diplomacy 30 years ago, in 2003 she was seconded to the Iraq Policy Unit at the British Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and from 2003 to 2007 she worked as a Deputy Ambassador at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in London.

Kateřina Fialková graduated from the University of Economics in Prague and after the Velvet Revolution, she studied also in Switzerland and in the USA. She was one of the leading figures that brought the Czech Republic into international organizations. She was also the first high-ranking Czech woman in NATO, working in Secretary General Lord Robertson’s cabinet.

Ambassador Fialková belonged to the generation of Czech diplomats who brought the Czech Republic not only to NATO, but also to the European Union, so that our country became anchored in the Western world – in democracy, the rule of law, respect for human rights and the dignity of every human life. Her inexhaustible energy, courage to stand up to all inequity and determination to bring the right things to their fulfillment, personified the values of the post-Velvet Revolution Czech foreign service. Our sincere condolences to her family and friends.
