From summer straight into winter: The first snow has fallen in the Czech Republic

Many people have already swapped short-sleeved T-shirts for sweaters, but this may not be enough, and winter jackets may be more appropriate-especially if you’re heading for the mountains. For example, the upper parts of the Giant Mountains were already covered with a dusting of snow on Sunday morning. Online cameras on the Humlnet server show this.

For example, the first snow of winter 2018/2019 fell on the ridges of the Krkonoše Mountains on October 12, a year earlier on October 14. This year, the snowfall came in a hurry.

The snowline was around 1100 meters above sea level on Sunday morning. “During the morning, about a centimeter of snow fell in the upper parts of the Krkonoše Mountains, and it got colder in the morning. It is a dusting-it will melt in the next few hours, days at most. Snow in the Giant Mountains is not exceptional at this time. What is exceptional is when snow falls in September, even in the valleys. It happens once every 15 to 20 years, but it did not happen this year,” said Štěpán Dunka from the Krkonoše Mountain Service.

According to the data on the website of the mountain service, it was raining and snowing in the morning at the ridge of Luční bouda at an altitude of 1415 meters, and it was around zero. It was snowing on Sněžka, and the temperature dropped to minus 1.3 degrees Celsius, according to data from the Czech Post Office’s measuring station. Winds gusted to 112 km/h on Snezka shortly after midnight, close to the hurricane limit of 118 km/h.

The wind stopped the cable car.

Strong winds stopped the upper section of the cable car to Sněžka on Sunday, lift operators said on their website. The same thing happened on Saturday. It can operate up to a wind speed of 60 km/h.

When the upper section of the cable car is out of service, people can walk from Růžová hora to Sněžka, and the route is 2.5 kilometers long. In the summer, from May 1 to September 30, the cable car to Sněžka operates from 08:00 to 19:00, depending on the weather. The cable car to Sněžka has two sections, the lower one from Pec pod Sněžkou to Růžová hora and the upper one from Růžová hora to Sněžka.

According to meteorologists, Sunday is expected to be cloudy to overcast in the Hradec Králové Region, with showers or occasional rain in most areas and mixed precipitation or snow above 1,100 meters. Later in the afternoon, the rainfall is expected to weaken, and the clouds will break up. Daytime high temperatures will be between 10 and 13 degrees Celsius, with five to eight degrees in the mountains. The winds should partially diminish in the evening.
