Frozen Chicken Contaminated with Salmonella Found in Czech Republic, Consumers Warned

The State Agricultural and Food Inspection (SZPI) in the Czech Republic has uncovered two batches of frozen chicken contaminated with salmonella, originating from Ukraine. The SZPI is urging consumers to avoid consuming this tainted chicken.

The discovery was made during a planned microbiological control at JIP Východočeská facilities in České Budějovice and Harrachov, where samples were taken for testing. Following the detection of salmonella contamination, the SZPI inspectors immediately ordered the withdrawal of the affected batches from the market. In a press release, the SZPI strongly advised consumers who have the affected batch of chicken at home not to consume it.

To ensure that this issue is communicated effectively, the inspectors have also alerted the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) about the presence of the harmful meat. In addition, administrative proceedings have been initiated against the responsible party, with a fine likely to be imposed.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause foodborne illnesses, particularly posing a significant risk to young children, pregnant women, and older adults. It is crucial for consumers to exercise caution when purchasing frozen meat, ensuring that it has been properly stored and cooked before consumption.

Regrettably, this incident is not the first case of salmonella contamination in the Czech Republic. In 2019, a large-scale outbreak of salmonella was linked to pork imported from Poland, affecting over 200 people.

The SZPI is committed to ongoing monitoring of food safety in the Czech Republic and endeavors to prevent such incidents in the future. Consumers who suspect they may have consumed contaminated food are advised to seek immediate medical attention. It is essential to remain vigilant and prioritize food safety to safeguard public health.
