Gas consumption in the Czech Republic fell by 19 percent year-on-year last year

The Energy and Regulatory Office (ERO) in the Czech Republic has released new statistics indicating that natural gas consumption fell by 19% in 2022. Customers used a total of 81.5 TWh of gas last year, with the decline in consumption evident in every month of the year. The reasons for the decrease are mainly attributed to the increase in energy prices and warm weather conditions.

Winter months saw the highest consumption, with January and December being the peak periods. The most significant decrease occurred in May when consumption fell by 32% compared to the previous year. Energy experts recorded the smallest decrease in September, when consumption fell by 8%.

The rise in gas prices played a significant role in the lower consumption, as customers sought to save money by reducing their usage. The warm weather was also a factor, particularly in recent winters, leading to a reduction in gas consumption.

Electricity consumption statistics for last year have not been released yet, but preliminary results indicate a decrease year-on-year, though not as significant as in the case of gas.

The lower gas consumption has resulted in savings for the state, as the Czech Republic has met the EU’s target of reducing consumption by at least 15% this winter. The country has saved around 850 million cubic meters of gas compared to the previous year, and gas stocks are now double the levels from the previous year. This has helped drive down energy prices on the market.
