Homelessness Challenges Teplice’s Spa Town Center, Prompting City Management to Seek Solutions
The central area of Teplice, a spa town, is grappling with challenges related to homelessness, creating discomfort for residents and visitors. Issues include disorder, unpleasant odors, and unease caused by homeless individuals occupying benches, consuming alcohol, and occasionally engaging in inappropriate behavior. Locals, frustrated with the situation, have criticized the city’s management for what they perceive as insufficient action.
Mrs. Jana Nováčková, a resident, described the scene, especially during warm weather, as a “disaster,” with homeless individuals drinking alcohol, urinating in public, and becoming loud and aggressive. The problem has prompted discussions on social media, where people criticize the city’s management for not adequately addressing the situation.
Mayor Jiří Štábl acknowledged the complexity of solving homelessness, emphasizing that it is a long-term process. He stated that the city works closely with the non-profit sector, regularly evaluates the situation, and seeks solutions. However, locals have expressed dissatisfaction with what they see as the inactivity of city guards, who reportedly do little to address the issue.
In an effort to make public spaces less comfortable for homeless individuals, the city recently installed dividing elements on selected benches at bus stops. The separators prevent people from sprawling on the benches. Mayor Štábl noted that this is just one of the actions taken by the city’s management.
Teplice currently has about seventy homeless individuals, with three regularly staying in Beneš Square, prompting the city to seek alternative shelter accommodation for them. However, additional homeless individuals join during the day from temporary shelters and other locations, contributing to the challenges faced by people passing through the square.
The city is actively addressing the issue, with strengthened patrols in the city center and ongoing efforts to find tools to alleviate the complex situation. The commitment of the city’s management reflects their acknowledgment of the need for comprehensive and sustainable solutions to homelessness in Teplice.
