IAEA Board of Governors Elects 2022–2023 Chairperson from Czech Republic

The IAEA Board of Governors elected by acclamation Ambassador Ivo Sramek as the Chairperson of the IAEA’s Board of Governors for 2022–2023. His one-year term commences today. He succeeds Ambassador Ham Sang Wook of the Republic of Korea.

Since September 2018, Ambassador Sramek has served as the Czech Republic’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and other international organizations in Vienna. Prior to his current post, Ambassador Sramek served as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Security and Multilateral Issues (2016-2018).

Born in Prague in 1955, Ambassador Sramek is a career diplomat who joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1987. He has assumed several positions at the Ministry: Director General and then Deputy Minister of the European Section; Political Director and General Director of the Multilateral Section, Director of the UN Department, Deputy Permanent Representative to NATO and the UN, delegate to the Fifth Committee of the UN, and Director of the Investment Department.

From 2011 to 2014, he served as Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium, and from 2004 to 2009, he was the Ambassador to the Political and Security Committee (PSC) of the EU, presiding over the PSC during the Czech Presidency in 2009.

Ambassador Sramek’s first post was in Lusaka, Zambia.

He is married and has two children.
