Local Activists Work to Restore Devastated Piarist Garden in Lipník nad Bečvou

Gabriela and Ivo Studenští, along with a group of dedicated local activists, have taken up the task of restoring the decimated Piarist garden located in the vicinity of the monastery in Lipník nad Bečvou, situated in the Přerov region. With a rich history dating back to 1638 when its foundations were established, the park holds immense potential.

The Studenští couple envisions transforming the garden into a community space that would serve both the city’s residents and its visitors. Their plan involves partially restoring it to its original form, reminiscent of the gardens that once catered to novices and monks in the Piarist college. Gabriela Studenští, a trained landscape architect, shares, “It would be wonderful to bring back a portion of the garden with rectangular beds intersected by paths and walkways, as it was in the past.”

Ivo Studenští, an IT specialist by profession, aims to revitalize the area of the monastery, which holds historical significance as the place where the renowned Moravian naturalist Gregor Johann Mendel received his education and conducted groundbreaking genetics research. Currently, the garden, spanning over two hectares, lies desolate and inaccessible to the public. Nonetheless, the Studenští couple remains undeterred and hopeful that, following in the footsteps of the successful restoration of the garden at Kroměříž Castle, they can bring the Piarist garden in Lipník nad Bečvou back to life.

The garden possesses the potential to be a splendid community space, complete with an orchard and areas dedicated to outdoor cultural events. The group of friends leading the restoration efforts have named their association “Hrášek” (Pea) in honor of Mendel’s renowned experiments with peas, which led to his discovery of the laws of heredity.

Despite the challenges they may face along the way, the Studenští couple and their fellow activists remain resolute and optimistic. The garden yearns for rejuvenation, and they are determined to make their vision a reality. Through their unwavering dedication and community support, the Piarist garden in Lipník nad Bečvou has a promising future ahead, ready to reclaim its position as a beautiful and cherished local attraction.
