Minister Lipavský Met with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Bajramov

On Tuesday, 23 April 2024, Minister Jan Lipavský and Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Djehun Bajramov met at the Czernin Palace. The Ministers discussed current foreign policy issues in the light of the war in Ukraine, with particular reference to the security situation in the South Caucasus region.

The security situation in the region was an important point of discussion. The ministers agreed that the war in Ukraine must not lead to the sidelining of other security problems. “We also discussed the political and security situation in the South Caucasus region. Czechia has an eminent interest in the stability and prosperity of this region. We have always considered the mutual recognition of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan and Armenia as a matter of principle,” the Czech diplomatic chief said.

The head of Czech diplomacy expressed support for the mediation efforts of the EU and the direct talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan and praised their results so far. “We support the mediation efforts of the EU and the US as well as the direct communication between the representatives of Armenia and Azerbaijan. In this context, I would like to commend the recent landmark agreement on the return of four villages to Azerbaijan,” Minister Lipavský said.

Minister Lipavský also congratulated Minister Bayram on hosting the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 29) in Baku in November.

The ministers also discussed the further development of bilateral relations with emphasis on their economic dimension, and focused on deepening cooperation in the energy sector. In 2023, Azerbaijani oil covered more than a quarter of Czech demand.
