Minister Lipavský welcomed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Morocco, Nasser Bourita
On Thursday, 26 October 2023, the Czech and Moroccan Ministers of Foreign Affairs met for the first time in eight years. The ministers signed a joint declaration, which is another step towards deepening mutual relations.
The declaration covers development in the fields of defence industry, health and pharmaceutical sectors, water management, the automotive industry, digitalisation, tourism, the mining industry, renewable energy, agriculture and the food industry.
The ministers also reviewed current security challenges that have a major impact on the foreign and security policy of the Czech Republic and Morocco. “We discussed the barbaric terrorist attacks of Hamas on the State of Israel. I reiterated Czechia’s full support for Israel and stressed that Hamas is a common enemy. Morocco is our strong security partner and its role in the stabilisation of the region is crucial,” said the Czech diplomatic chief.
The ministers also discussed the global impact of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Minister Lipavský appreciated Morocco’s attitude towards the ongoing war. “It is necessary to increase our pressure on Russia to put an end to its illegal invasion of Ukraine and to resume the implementation of the Black Sea Grain Initiative,” Minister Lipavský said.
Ministers briefly touched on the EU-Morocco cooperation. In this context, Minister Jan Lipavský praised the deepening relations and Morocco’s key role in the fight against illegal migration and terrorism. Czechia was also one of the first European countries to respond immediately to the tragic earthquake in Morocco in September this year. We provided 5 million Czech crowns.
On the sidelines of the meeting, the Moroccan Minister and the Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade signed a Memorandum of Understanding on mining and geology. Both the Memorandum and the Joint Statement of the Foreign Ministers are legally non-binding documents, which nevertheless demonstrate the excellent and successfully developing relations between our two countries.
