Modern varieties of Czech hops dominate July’s Choice of Brewers
In July, the favourite programme of Plzeňský Prazdroj Choice of Sládků gives the space to shine on modern varieties of hops bred by Czech hops. Pilsner brewers have brewed a Hop Hop Hop beer, which follows current trends and practices in brewing.
The unfiltered light special contains four types of modern hop varieties: Vital (launched 2008), Agnus (2001), Saaz Shine (2019) and Saturn (2019). The first two listed hops have a distinct bitterness and a hop-like to spicy aroma. The Saaz Shine variety, on the other hand, is distinguished by its delicate herbal aroma and citrus tones, while the Saturn hops are characterised by a distinctive fruity aroma reminiscent of apricots and tropical fruits.
“Although the basic varieties of Czech hop growers remain Žatecký poloraný červeňák, Sládek and Premiant, ever larger areas of hops are planted with new varieties, which hops respond to the trend of brewing beers of various styles. The Vital and Agnus varieties have gained popularity among brewers for higher levels of bitter substances, the new Saturn and Saaz Shine hops give beers a pleasant exotic aroma,” zdeněk Rosa, chairman of the board of the Chmelařství cooperative, which manages 96% of the Czech Republic’s hop areas, evaluates the selection of hops used.
The perfectly pumped Hop Hop Hop special will be available to enjoy throughout July in selected pubs throughout the Czech Republic.
