New streaming service SkyShowtime launches in Czech Republic

A new streaming service will launch in the Czech Republic on February 14, and it should boast an impressive lineup of titles. SkyShowtime, as the name implies, will carry titles from European broadcaster Sky Studios and U.S. channel Showtime, but that’s not all: it will also carry programming from US streaming services Peacock and Paramount+, as well as studios such as Universal, Dreamworks, and Nickelodeon.

SkyShowtime is already available in a handful of other European countries, but will roll out to an additional eight countries in central and eastern Europe on February 14 including the Czech Republic.

“It’s our biggest launch to date. I’m extremely excited to build on the continued success of the service, which has already launched in Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Portugal and a number of regions in the Adriatic region,” SkyShowtime CEO Monty Sarhan says in a press release.

A SkyShowtime subscription in the Czech Republic will run 179 crowns per month. That’s less than Netflix (which costs between 199-319 crowns monthly), HBO Max, Apple TV+, and Disney+ (which all run 199 crowns per month), but more than Prime Video’s 79 crowns.

Among European countries, SkyShowtime only charges more in Denmark than the Czech Republic. In neighboring Slovakia, for example, the streaming service will run €6 (about 140 crowns) per month.

Each of these streaming services has different programming in the Czech Republic than elsewhere. Locally, SkyShowtime shouldn’t be expected to carry the full range of Peacock and Paramount+ titles available in the states.

At launch on February 14, however, SkyShowtime will carry some major titles to attract viewers including Top Gun: MaverickJurassic World: DominionThe NorthmanMinions: The Rise of Gru, and TV series such as Star Trek: Strange New WorldsHaloYellowstone, starring Kevin Costner, and Tulsa King, with Sylvester Stallone.

Some of SkyShowtime’s programming has previously been available on other streaming services, but will transfer to a new host this month. Films and series that have recently been removed from HBO Max will reappear on SkyShowtime. Original Czech programming that has been pulled from HBO Max will also reappear (and in some cases premiere) on SkyShowtime later this year.

While some of these programs have been available locally on other streaming platforms, this will be the first time popular shows such as Yellowstone have been made officially available on the Czech market.

SkyShowtime is one of the last major studio streaming services to launch in the Czech Republic. If you’re keeping track, the country’s other streaming options include Netflix, Disney+, HBOMax, AppleTV+, and Amazon Prime.

Local streaming service Voyo, operated by TV Nova, also offers content specifically tailored to the Czech market. Niche streaming services like Tubi or Shudder have yet to make it to the country. Anime streaming service Crunchyroll is available, but has been criticized for its lack of content and Czech localization.

SkyShowtime will offer programming in its original language with Czech subtitles and dubbing options (and going by other major streaming platforms on the local market, most likely English subtitles as well). The streaming service will debut in the Czech Republic from February 14 on the web and TV apps.
