Peklo’s Spring Snowflakes Draw Nature Enthusiasts to Česká Lípa’s Natural Marvel
As winter relinquishes its grip and yields to the gentle embrace of spring, the banks of the Robečský stream in the national natural monument of Peklo near Česká Lípa undergo a breathtaking transformation. Here, amidst the serene beauty of nature, swathes of spring snowflakes burst into bloom, casting a spell that beckons nature lovers from far and wide.
For many, a pilgrimage to Peklo has evolved into a cherished family tradition. From families with children to couples, groups of seniors, and avid photographers, people from diverse backgrounds converge to witness this captivating natural spectacle. The sight of spring snowflakes carpeting the landscape in hues of green and white, often in abundance, is nothing short of mesmerizing.
Martin Macho, the Mayor of Zahrádky near Česká Lípa, finds himself inundated with queries about the bloom from curious visitors since mid-February. “We’ve been fielding questions about the snowflakes for about 14 days, ever since the first reports emerged of their imminent bloom,” shares the mayor.
On peak days, the influx of visitors to Peklo can swell to a staggering thousand individuals daily. According to information boards in the valley, the monitoring turnstile has recorded as many as 1,500 people in a single day and up to 30,000 passages annually.
Traversing the enchanting landscape of Peklo is an adventure in itself. Visitors navigate wooden walkways, traverse bridges, and navigate around tree roots and muddy patches. Despite the occasional challenges, the journey through the rocky canyon is a rewarding and unforgettable experience.
Peklo has been a cherished tourist destination for decades. Designated an official natural site in 1967 due to the presence of spring snowflakes, the area has long served as a haven for recreation and leisure, dating back to the 19th century. Today, the valley is a sanctuary for pedestrians, with even cyclists required to dismount and traverse its paths on foot, preserving its natural splendor for generations to come.
