Pilsner Urquell auctions off beer gown for Centre Paraple
Prague, December 14, 2023
The traditional Pilsner Urquell charity auction for centrum Paraple has raised nearly 520,000 kroner this year to help people with spinal cord damage return to active life. The symbolic cheque was handed to Zdenek Svěrák and David Lukeš from the Centre Paraple by representatives of the brewery yesterday. In the 12 years leading up to the Christmas auction, Pilsner Urquell has helped wheelchair users to the tune of almost 22 million crowns.
The biggest interest in this year’s auction was the dress worn by Anya Geisler at the opening of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival. The gown, made from cloth made from Pilsner Urquell beer, was priced at £126,242. More money for the Central Paraple account was then donated by auctioneers from the auction of 9 paintings with the theme of the Pilsner lager. Most intrigued by the painting Curves by Dejvid Jones, which fetched £74,001.
“I’m very pleased that despite the plight, people are still willing to help those in need. We see it as a great gift to help people in wheelchairs deal with difficult handicaps. I would like to thank everyone with all my heart for this,” says Zdeněk Svěrák, founder of the Paraple Center.
The funds raised will be used by Centrum Paraple, which helps people with spinal cord damage to return to active life, to provide residential social rehabilitation services and, newly, to expand the activities of centra Paraple into a field form of service. “I would like to thank all of Paraple for the fact that thanks to the Pilsner Urquell auction we can continue to develop and improve our services and thus improve clients’ lives. Thanks to this support, we can see that the public perceives our work as meaningful, which we greatly appreciate,” adds David Lukeš, director of the Paraple Center.
Pilsner Urquell hosted the auction for the 12th time this year. “The Centre Paraple has managed to contribute almost 22 million crowns in all its time. We are very pleased that we have been able to contribute to really good causes and help people who are coping with injury or illness and trying to live actively again. We thank all the auctioneers who have decided to contribute to a good cause,” says Kristýna Tereková, senior brand manager at Pilsner Urquell.
In past years, for example, designer bottles from leading Czech artists have been auctioned in a charity auction for the benefit of the Paraple Center, or last year an annual watch to mark 180 years of Pilsner Urquell.
