PM Fiala Dismisses China’s Criticism of Pavel’s Call To Taiwanese President

The Czech Republic has defended its decision to maintain good relations in economy, education, and research with Taiwan, despite criticism from China. Prime Minister Petr Fiala and President-Elect Petr Pavel emphasized that the Czech Republic is a sovereign state and has the right to make its own decisions regarding its representatives and who they communicate with. Fiala stated that while China is an important trade partner, the country also values its relationship with democratic Taiwan, which shares common values of freedom, democracy, and human rights. President-Elect Pavel added that maintaining a relationship with Taiwan is fully in line with the approved concept of Czech foreign policy.

Despite the One China policy, which is adhered to by most countries, including the Czech Republic, the Czech cabinet has expressed its interest in cooperating with Taiwan due to its democratic character. However, China views Taiwan as its province and has threatened military intervention if it declares independence. The Chinese Foreign Ministry criticized the phone call between President-Elect Pavel and Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and questioned Pavel’s trustworthiness. The presidential office of Taiwan described the phone call as a diplomatic breakthrough.

In conclusion, the Czech Republic has emphasized its sovereignty in making decisions regarding its representatives and communication with other nations, while balancing its relationship with China and Taiwan. Despite criticism from China, the country values its relationship with democratic Taiwan and its shared values of freedom, democracy, and human rights.
