Prague 12 Secures Norwegian Funding to Transform Concrete Slabs into Green Spaces
Prague 12 has successfully obtained financial support from Norwegian funds to undertake a project that aims to convert concrete slabs into vibrant spaces for active leisure, sports facilities, and playgrounds. The initiative, titled “Adaptation Measures in residential areas,” focuses on transforming existing asphalt surfaces into natural areas and comfortable seating spaces.
The project has received a grant of CZK 8,982,000 from the Financial Mechanism of Norway 2014-2021. Prague 12 will contribute 10 percent of the total project cost, resulting in an estimated implementation budget of CZK 9,980,000.
Deputy Mayor of Prague 12, Vojtěch Mikoláš (ODS), highlighted the collaborative approach taken in the project’s development. “We engaged in joint neighborhood meetings with residents in March and April to discuss specific possibilities for improving our surroundings and revitalization projects. These discussions focused on asphalt surfaces in Rakovského, Hausmannova, Botevova, Pejevová, and Plevenská streets,” said Mikoláš.
The selection process for the project contractor will take place in July, and construction is scheduled to commence in September. The project aims to create two types of spaces: playgrounds with permeable surfaces such as rubber mulch or other materials, incorporating features like barefoot trails, as well as relaxation zones with grass or meadow seeding, trees, and perennial flower beds.
Deputy Mayor Mikoláš expressed the project’s vision, stating, “The goal is to transform concrete into greenery and establish an attractive neighborhood space out of remnants from the past, whether for relaxation or as natural elements that enhance the area.”
Through this initiative, several previously unattractive and underutilized areas will be revitalized, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for residents. The transformation of these spaces into vibrant and inviting green areas will provide opportunities for leisure activities, contribute to community well-being, and create an appealing environment for all to enjoy.
