Prague 3 Approves Renaming Koněvova Street to Hartigova Street: A Tribute to Karel Hartig’s Contributions

PRAGUE, June 21, 2023 – The city council of Prague 3 has announced the approval of the renaming of Koněvova Street to Hartigova Street, effective from October. The decision, recommended by the city commission and subsequently approved by the council, honors Karel Hartig, the first mayor of the Žižkov district, for his invaluable contributions to the development of the local community.

The renaming of the street, while widely seen as a fitting tribute, has not been without its fair share of concerns and debates among residents. The foremost issue raised by locals pertains to the administrative burden of updating their official documents with the new address. In response, the city council has pledged to streamline the process, ensuring simplicity and efficiency in facilitating the necessary changes.

Karel Hartig, an esteemed figure in the region’s history, previously served as the mayor of Královské Vinohrady before assuming the position of the first mayor of Žižkov. Throughout his tenure, Hartig played a pivotal role in the district’s growth and development, leaving an indelible mark on the community. The decision to rename the street is a testament to his enduring legacy.

However, the renaming has not been devoid of controversy, primarily because the street was previously named after Marshal Koněv, a Soviet military commander known for his involvement in the liberation of Prague in 1945. Despite Koněv’s historical significance, his legacy remains complex due to his role in suppressing the Hungarian uprising in 1956 and his involvement in building the Berlin Wall.

This renaming initiative is part of a broader effort by the city council to reevaluate historical figures’ legacies and promote inclusivity and diversity within Prague. The council emphasizes that the decision does not seek to diminish Marshal Koněv’s contributions, but rather to recognize Karel Hartig’s profound impact on the Žižkov district’s growth.

As the city prepares for the upcoming street name change, residents are urged to promptly update their official records and documents to reflect the new address. Prague 3 assures its residents that every effort will be made to facilitate a smooth transition and minimize any inconvenience caused.

With the renaming of Koněvova Street to Hartigova Street, Prague 3 takes a significant step forward in preserving its history, honoring local pioneers, and embracing a more inclusive future for all its residents.
