Prague-shot ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ scores 9 Oscar nominations

After scoring big at last week’s BAFTA nominations, All Quiet on the Western Front has now received a total of nine Academy Award nominations, tying The Banshees of Inisherin for second-most nominations at this year’s awards behind Everything Everywhere All at Once with 11. The film, based on Erich Maria Remarque’s classic novel, was shot in and around Prague over the spring of 2021.

Given the number of nominations and competing films, All Quiet on the Western Front may now be considered one of the favorites to be named Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards. Other films nominated for Best Picture include Avatar: The Way of WaterThe Banshees of InisherinElvisEverything Everywhere All at OnceThe FabelmansTárTop Gun: MaverickTriangle of Sadness, and Women Talking.

All Quiet on the Western Front has an element of timeliness on its side, depicting a striking anti-war narrative as conflict rages on in Ukraine. The 95th Academy Awards will take place on March 12, a few weeks after the one-year mark since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)

All Quiet on the Western Front’s nominations include Best Sound, represented by Prague-based sound editor Viktor Prášil. He shares the nomination with Lars GinzselFrank Kruse, and Markus Stemler.

Other Prague filmmakers included in nominations for All Quiet on the Western Front include Visual Effects, represented by UPP Prague’s Viktor Müller (sharing the nomination with Markus FrankKamil Jafar, and Frank Petzold) and Makeup and Hairstyling, represented by local makeup & hair stylist Linda Eisenhamerová (along with Heike Merker).

Remaining nominations received by All Quiet on the Western Front include Original Score (Volker Bertelmann), Adapted Screenplay (Edward BergerIan Stokell and Leslie Patterson), International Film, Production Design (Christian M. GoldbreckErnestine Hipper), Cinematography (James Friend), and Best Picture.

Director Edward Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front was shot in and around Prague in 2021 with the participation of local film crews and filmmakers. Prague-based production company Sirena Film helped oversee the construction of a World War One battlefield the size of two football fields in a rural location outside of Prague. Despite filming during the pandemic and related restrictions, the production was realized within its budget.

All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)

All Quiet on the Western Front has a history at the Oscars. The very first adaptation, released in 1930, won Best Picture at the third-ever Academy Awards, with director Lewis Milestone winning Best Director.

2022’s All Quiet on the Western Front marks the first-ever German-language adaptation of the novel, but it isn’t the first to be filmed in Prague; a 1979 version was also filmed outside of Prague in what was then-Czechoslovakia.

What’s the most Academy Award nominations for a movie shot in Prague? Amadeus maintains this record with a total of 11 nominations in 1984; it ended up winning a total of eight awards including Best Picture.

This year’s Academy Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 12, from 5:00 p.m. Los Angeles time 2:00 a.m. Prague time). Jimmy Kimmel will host the awards show for the third time following gigs in 2017 and 2018.
