Prague Zoo Unveils Ambitious Plans for “The Arctic” Exhibit, a Haven for Polar Bears and Arctic Wildlife
The Prague Zoo, renowned for its historic success in breeding polar bears, is embarking on an ambitious venture to create a state-of-the-art exhibit dedicated to Arctic wildlife. Named “The Arctic,” the project aims to provide a habitat for seals and various other Arctic animals, situated in the upper part of the zoo opposite the Dja Reserve.
Miroslav Bobek, the director of the Prague Zoo, emphasizes the need for a new exhibit to address the challenges faced by polar bears, notably as victims of global warming and climate change. The zoo has a rich tradition in polar bear breeding, with a notable milestone achieved in the 1940s when Polárka, the first polar bear raised to adulthood in captivity, was born.
The existing polar bear exhibit, dating back to the 1930s, is deemed inadequate due to its small size and unfavorable location, receiving excessive sunlight. “The Arctic” aims to adhere to contemporary standards, featuring expansive pools and spacious enclosures. The grand scale of the project is reflected in its estimated cost, approximately four times more than the recently inaugurated Dja Reserve.
The fate of “The Arctic” hinges on the forthcoming decision of the Prague City Council regarding funding for the construction. If approved, the zoo plans to commence the search for builders later this year, with construction slated to begin in winter and spanning four years. Failure to secure funding would result in the abandonment of the project, leading the zoo to bid farewell to its beloved polar bears.
Amidst these developments, the Prague Zoo continues to innovate across its grounds. In March, new enclosures for Przewalski’s horses will open, marking the completion of the initial phase of the Plains’ reconstruction in the upper part of the grounds. These additions will complement an exhibition focused on transporting Przewalski’s horses, symbolizing the zoo’s commitment to conservation and education.
